ABO Energy
Scales backup infrastructure to support global renewable energy growth with Scality ARTESCA
ABO Energy develops and builds wind and solar parks as well as storage and hydrogen projects. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, the company has delivered 6.6 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity to date. With approximately 1,400 employees across four continents, ABO Energy manages the full lifecycle of projects from planning and financing to construction, operation, and servicing.
Challenges
Legacy infrastructure could not scale with rapid data growth, jeopardizing reliability and operational efficiency
ABO Energy’s IT team was operating aging hardware that could no longer be expanded, making reliable backups increasingly difficult. Storage limitations and hardware failures created daily administrative burdens, requiring constant monitoring to ensure backups completed successfully.
At the same time, strict security and compliance expectations called for stronger protection measures such as immutability and data sovereignty. The uncertainty over whether the existing infrastructure could continue to handle growing workloads became both operationally and personally stressful for the team.
“Success in my position means implementing an IT system that operates largely automatically with minimal administrative effort, based on a well-thought-out and sustainable concept.”
Solution
A scalable, immutable backup architecture with local control
ABO Energy modernized its backup environment by deploying Scality ARTESCA as the primary backup storage system. Implemented initially with a single node, ARTESCA serves as a dedicated backup-to-disk target for business-critical data. The system is largely isolated from other network structures to enhance security and maintain full data sovereignty.
ARTESCA’s immutable backups prevent accidental or intentional deletion, while its scalable, modular expansion ensures that storage capacity can grow alongside the company’s renewable energy project portfolio. The ARTESCA deployment also delivered stronger observability, allowing the IT team to monitor backup performance and transfer speeds with precision.
“What we liked best is that backups are written as immutable, meaning accidental or intentional deletion is prevented.”
Results
Reliable backups and smooth expansion as global projects scale
Once ARTESCA was in place, backup jobs ran twice as fast (100% faster), reducing a 1.2 TB backup from 80 minutes to under 40 minutes, and without errors, restoring confidence in the company’s data protection processes. Administrative effort dropped noticeably, allowing IT resources to refocus on higher-value activities rather than constant monitoring, troubleshooting, and hardware maintenance.
Most importantly, storage expansions can now be carried out smoothly, without unexpected complications, ensuring that IT infrastructure no longer acts as a bottleneck for the company’s growing portfolio of worldwide, renewable energy projects.
Key operational outcomes:-
Backup jobs run 100% faster with consistent, error-free performance
-
Backup errors reduced from ~3 per week to one in two years, lowering administrative effort
-
Immutable backups prevent accidental or malicious deletion
-
Local deployment maintains full data sovereignty
-
Storage capacity expanded without interrupting backup operations
“For us in IT, the biggest advantage is that storage expansions can now be carried out smoothly while backup processes continue to run automatically and reliably.”
“With a stable and secure backup foundation in place, IT is no longer a source of uncertainty but a reliable enabler for ABO Energy’s continued global growth.”
